About DrugCovered

Free, independent Medicare Part D plan comparison — powered entirely by public CMS data.

What is DrugCovered?

DrugCovered is a free online tool that helps Medicare beneficiaries compare Part D prescription drug plans based on their actual medications. Instead of guessing which plan might be cheapest, you enter your drugs and ZIP code, and we show you — side by side — which plans cover your medications and what your estimated annual cost would be for each plan.

Medicare Part D plan choice is surprisingly consequential. The same medication can cost dramatically different amounts depending on which plan you choose — and most enrollees never compare plans at all. We built DrugCovered to change that.

Our Mission

Three Core Principles

We are independent. DrugCovered is not affiliated with any insurance company, pharmacy benefit manager, or health plan. We have no financial interest in which plan you choose.

We are free. Every feature on this site is available at no cost to you. We do not require registration, a phone number, or any personal information to use the comparison tool.

We use public data. All plan and formulary information displayed on DrugCovered comes directly from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) — the same federal agency that administers Medicare. We do not fabricate, adjust, or editorialize the data.

How We Help

1

Enter Your Drugs & ZIP

Tell us which medications you take and your ZIP code. No account required.

2

Compare Plans Side-by-Side

We show every Part D plan available in your area with estimated annual costs for your specific drug list.

3

See Drug-Level Detail

Drill into each plan to see which tier each drug falls on, whether restrictions apply (prior auth, step therapy, quantity limits), and exact copay amounts.

4

Make an Informed Choice

Armed with real cost estimates, you can choose the plan that actually saves you the most money — not just the one with the lowest monthly premium.

Data Sources

DrugCovered is built entirely on free, publicly available government data. We do not purchase data from insurers or third parties. Our sources:

Dataset Source What It Provides
CMS Plan Information File data.cms.gov Plan names, premiums, deductibles, star ratings, benefit structures
CMS Formulary File data.cms.gov Which drugs each plan covers, tiers, copays, restrictions
CMS Geographic Service Area File data.cms.gov Which ZIP codes and counties each plan serves
FDA National Drug Code (NDC) Directory fda.gov Drug names, generic/brand relationships, drug classification
CMS Beneficiary Cost File data.cms.gov Copay and coinsurance data by tier and pharmacy type

All data is sourced from publicly available CMS and FDA files. Data is updated annually following CMS plan year releases, typically in the fall prior to the Annual Enrollment Period.

Transparency

DrugCovered is operated by an independent developer and is not a subsidiary of, funded by, or affiliated with any health insurance company, pharmacy benefit manager, broker, or government agency.

The site may display advertising or contain affiliate links to Medicare plan enrollment services. These commercial relationships do not influence the plan data, rankings, or cost estimates we display — all of which are derived solely from CMS public data. For full details, please see our Affiliate Disclosure.

We welcome feedback, corrections, and questions. If you notice a data discrepancy, please contact us and we will investigate promptly.
